Aomori is one of the few prefectures in Japan bordered by three seas: the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, and the Tsugaru Strait.
The Tsugaru Strait is characterized by rough seas, with waves reaching 2-3 meters or more, and intense winds.
As the Tsushima Warm Current from the Sea of Japan flows northward and exits into the Pacific Ocean, it enters the complex underwater terrain of the Tsugaru Strait. This causes plankton and small fish to gather, attracting large fish, such as tuna, which come to hunt them. The tuna consume vast amounts of small fish, growing into massive creatures weighing hundreds of kilograms, becoming like black diamonds in the sea.
The Tsugaru Strait has long played an important role as a trade route, and many stories related to people's lives and unique cultures have been passed down through the area.
A short ferry ride between Oma and Hakodate offers a chance to feel the invigorating sea breeze, experience the grandeur of the boundary between Honshu and Hokkaido, and witness the ever-changing beauty of the ocean throughout the year.
This area offers a unique blend of nature, history, and delicious food and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.
